November 1915 Karlsruhe, alt-kath., ∞ Marie Fuchs.&lt;br/ &gt;&lt;br/ &gt;<br /> Adolf Meess, Sohn des Karlsruher Zimmermeisters und Stadtrats Simon Meess, übernahm um 1869 nach der Ausbildung das väterliche Baugeschäft in der Rüppurrer Chaussee 10 (später &lt;lex id=&quot;top-2378&quot;&gt;Rüppurrer Straße&lt;/lex&gt; 18), das er ab 1890 gemeinsam mit dem Kaufmann August Nees unter dem Namen &quot;Meeß &amp; Nees Baugeschäft und Baumaterialien&quot; betrieb. 1895 zog sich Meess aus dem Berufsleben zurück, lebte fortan als Privatier und betätigte sich in gemeinnützigen Einrichtungen wie beispielsweise als Mitglied in der Verwaltung des Karlsruher &lt;lex id=&quot;ins-1339&quot;&gt;Waisenhauses&lt;/lex&gt; und des Schatzungsrats. Die Geschäftsführung des Baugeschäfts übernahmen sein Bruder, der Architekt Hermann Meess, und der Kaufmann August Nees. 1905 wandelten beide die Firma in die &quot;Meeß &amp; Nees-Aktiengesellschaft für Beton und Eisenbetonbauten im Hoch- und Tiefbau&quot; um und amtierten danach als Vorstandsmitglieder.<br /> <br /> Neben seiner beruflichen Tätigkeit engagierte sich Meess im kommunalpolitischen Bereich. 1884-1894 war er &lt;lex id=&quot;ins-1120&quot;&gt;Stadtverordneter&lt;/lex&gt;, anschließend bis 1914 Stadtrat. Meess gehörte verschiedenen städtischen Kommissionen an und tat sich aufgrund seiner Fachkenntnisse und Erfahrung im Baugewerbe insbesondere als Mitglied der Bau- und der Grundstücksschätzungskommission hervor. Zusätzlich wurde er in den Bezirksrat und in die Kreisversammlung berufen. Meess war zudem langjähriges Mitglied des Aufsichtsrats der &lt;lex id=&quot;ins-0269&quot;&gt;Karlsruher Vereinsbank&lt;/lex&gt; sowie Vorstandsmitglied der &lt;lex id=&quot;ins-1449&quot;&gt;Landesversicherungsanstalt Baden&lt;/lex&gt;.<br /> <br /> Für seine gemeinnützige Tätigkeit erhielt er 1902 den &lt;lex id=&quot;ins-1607&quot;&gt;Orden vom Zähringer Löwen&lt;/lex&gt; II.
