Leopold Hauck, Sohn eines Hauptlehrers, besuchte 1882-1886 die Realschule Neckarbischofsheim und ab 1887 die Baugewerkeschule (heute <lex id="ins-0900">Hochschule Karlsruhe - Technik und Wirtschaft</lex>) sowie die technische Wiesenbauschule in Karlsruhe. Parallel zu seiner beruflichen Ausbildung war er in den Semesterferien als Kulturgehilfe bei den Kulturinspektionen Heidelberg (1887/88,1891), Freiburg (1889) und Karlsruhe (1890) tätig. Nach dem Militärdienst (1891-1893) arbeitete Hauck ab November 1894 als Beamter für die Stadt Karlsruhe bei der Kulturinspektion, Wasser- und Straßenbauamt. 1896/97 erhielt er die Beaufsichtigung über den Neubau der Wasserleitung und des <lex id="ins-1474">Wasserwerks</lex> in der <lex id="top-2176">Pfinztalstraße</lex> in Durlach. Haucks dabei überzeugende fachliche Leistungen führten dazu, dass er 1897 vom Durlacher Gemeinderat abgeworben wurde und zum Juli desselben Jahres die Stelle des Stadtbaumeisters in Durlach übertragen bekam. In seinem Amt – ab 1. Januar 1908 als Vorstand des Stadtbauamts Durlach – hatte er die Aufsicht über das Hoch- und Tiefbauwesen und das städtische Wasserwerk inne.<br />

Unter Haucks Leitung wurden in der Folgezeit mehrere für die Stadtentwicklung Durlachs bedeutsame Projekte realisiert. Zu diesen gehörten der Bau des städtischen Wasserwerks, die Fassung der Lußbrunnenquelle, der Bau des Schwimm- und Sonnenbads (seit 1955 <lex id="ins-1513">Turmbergbad</lex>), die Dürrbach-Korrektion, die Verlegung der Wasser- und Gasleitungen nach <lex id="top-0210">Aue</lex> und <lex id="top-1002">Grötzingen</lex>, die Verlegung einer Gesamtkanalisation für Durlach, die Ausarbeitung von Plänen zur Stadterweiterung sowie der Bau mehrerer Straßen und Gehwege. Darüber hinaus erwarb sich Hauck Verdienste um das <lex id="ins-0834">Pfinzgaumuseum</lex>, dem er bei Bauarbeiten entdeckte historische Funde für dessen Sammlung überließ. Ende 1921 führte ein bei Hauck diagnostiziertes Herzleiden zu dessen dauerhafter Arbeitsunfähigkeit.<br />
<br />
1950 wurde die Goethestraße in Durlach in <lex id="top-1108">Hauckstraße</lex> umbenannt. Hauck ist auf dem <lex id="ins-1365">Friedhof Durlach</lex> bestattet (Feld 21). Im Dezember 2015 stimmte der Karlsruher <lex id="ins-1095">Gemeinderat</lex> dafür, sein Grab in das Verzeichnis der Ehrengräber aufzunehmen.<br />
