In dieser Funktion leitete Ries jahrelang die Vereinskongresse des VDR und nahm an Preisgerichten, Studienreisen und Ausstellungseröffnungen teil. Außerdem war Ries Mitglied des Gartenbauvereins, des städtischen Beamtenvereins sowie des Badischen Vereins für Geflügelzucht. Des Weiteren schrieb er auch im Ruhestand zahlreiche Beiträge für die VDR-Vereinszeitung „Rosenzeitung“, deren Schriftleiter er von 1916 bis 1922 war.</div></td>

In dieser Funktion leitete Ries jahrelang die Vereinskongresse des VDR und nahm an Preisgerichten, Studienreisen und Ausstellungseröffnungen teil. Außerdem war Ries Mitglied des Gartenbauvereins, des städtischen Beamtenvereins sowie des Badischen Vereins für Geflügelzucht. Des Weiteren schrieb er auch im Ruhestand zahlreiche Beiträge für die VDR-Vereinszeitung „Rosenzeitung“, deren Schriftleiter er von 1916 bis 1922 war.</div></td>

Seit diesem Zeitpunkt war Ries verantwortlich für die Pflege und den Ausbau der städtischen Grünanlagen, darunter auch des <lex id="ins-1066">Stadtgartens</lex>, der sich unter seiner Leitung zu einem Anziehungspunkt für alle Bevölkerungsschichten entwickelte und ab 1910, dem Baubeginn des neuen <lex id="ins-1335">Hauptbahnhofs</lex>, deutlich an Größe zunahm. Außerdem ließ Ries 1891 den <lex id="top-1814">Nymphengarten</lex> (<lex id="top-3196">Nymphengruppe</lex> geschaffen von <lex id="bio-1132">Heinrich Weltring</lex>), 1897-1899 im Karlsruher Stadtgarten das erste Rosarium (Rosengarten, ein neuer folgte 1915) und 1903 in unmittelbarer Nähe des Rosengartens ein Nympaearium, ein beheizbares Becken mit exotischen Wasserpflanzen, anlegen. Weitere Grünanlagen im Stadtgebiet entstanden in den folgenden Jahren im <lex id="top-0256">Sallenwäldchen</lex>, im <lex id="top-3073">Beiertheimer</lex> Wäldchen und auf dem <lex id="ins-1353">Hauptfriedhof</lex>.
