Als Syndikus war er von 1899 bis 1901 für die Gasanlagenfabrik Carl Francke in Bremen tätig. Danach war er bis 1907 zweiter Syndikus der Deutschen Bank Berlin. Zwei Jahre arbeitete er dann als Direktor der Neuen Photographischen Gesellschaft in Berlin, ehe er am 1. September 1909 3. Bürgermeister der Stadt Karlsruhe wurde. Kleinschmidt, der im &lt;lex id=&quot;ereig-0068&quot;&gt;Ersten Weltkrieg&lt;/lex&gt; als Leutnant der Landwehr eingezogen, noch 1914 zum Oberleutnant und 1916 zum Hauptmann befördert wurde, war seit August 1915 beim Kaiserlichen Gouvernement Antwerpen, der dortigen deutschen Besatzungsmacht, tätig. Nach wiederholten Anträgen der Stadt wurde er am 21. März 1918 aus dem Heeresdienst entlassen. Am 29.
