Braun Buchverlag (seit 2011 Teil der G. Braun Telefonbuchverlage GmbH &amp; Co. KG) bis 2014 herausgegeben wurde. Sein wohl wichtigster und meist genutzter Inhalt besteht aus einem Häuser- und Straßenverzeichnis sowie einem Namenteil der in diesen Straßen und Häusern lebenden und in Karlsruhe gemeldeten Personen. <br /> <br /> Anhand des Namens kann die Wohnadresse einer Person recherchiert und umgekehrt kann anhand einer Wohnadresse auf den Bewohner eines Hauses geschlossen werden. Bis 1980 waren zusätzlich die jeweiligen Hausbesitzer aufgeführt, und bis 1996 gab das Namensverzeichnis Auskunft über Beruf oder Gewerbe einer Person. Seit 1893 sind Frauennamen im Karlsruher Adressbuch aufgeführt. Frühere Einträge erhielten Frauen nur, wenn sie als Witwe den Haushaltsvorstand bildeten. Ab den Ausgaben der 1870er-Jahre bis zu denen im frühen 20. Jahrhundert war dem Adressbuch ein Stadtplan beigelegt.<br /> <br /> Des Weiteren enthält das Karlsruher Adressbuch Informationen in Form eines vorangestellten Behörden- und Branchenverzeichnisses. Dieses erfuhr im Laufe seines Bestehens mehrere inhaltliche Veränderungen und wurde 1979 wegen des immer größeren Buchumfangs als Band II unter dem Namen Wegweiser durch Karlsruhe aus dem Adressbuch ausgegliedert. Von 1959-2014 war zudem der Karlsruher Wirtschaftsspiegel, eine Publikation, die jährlich über die neuesten wirtschaftlichen Entwicklungen in der Fächerstadt berichtete, Teil des Kompendiums.<br /> <br /> Das erste Karlsruher Adressbuch erschien 1818 unter dem Titel Wegweiser für die Großherzogliche &lt;lex id=&quot;ereig-0269&quot;&gt;Residenzstadt&lt;/lex&gt; Karlsruhe im G. Braun Buchverlag und hatte einen Umfang von 100 Seiten. Während des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde das Adressbuch bei wechselnden Verlagen publiziert und kam unter mehrfach geänderten Namen auf den Markt, so beispielsweise von 1843-1872 als Adresskalender der Residenzstadt Carlsruhe oder anschließend bis 1919 als Adressbuch für die Haupt- und Residenzstadt Carlsruhe. Von 1920-1936 hatte es den Titel Adressbuch der &lt;lex id=&quot;ereig-0134&quot;&gt;Landeshauptstadt&lt;/lex&gt; Karlsruhe, von 1937-1940 Karlsruher Adressbuch und von 1941-1943/44 Adressbuch der &lt;lex id=&quot;ereig-0107&quot;&gt;Gau- und Landeshauptstadt&lt;/lex&gt; Karlsruhe. Seit 1945 heißt es Adressbuch der Stadt Karlsruhe.<br /> <br /> Das Karlsruher Adressbuch erschien vor 1870 nicht jährlich, sondern in unregelmäßigen Abständen. Erst mit der Reichsgründung begann eine nahezu kontinuierliche jährliche Herausgabe, wobei in den 1930er- und 1940er-Jahren wegen der &lt;lex id=&quot;ereig-0210&quot;&gt;Weltwirtschaftskrise&lt;/lex&gt; und der Kriegsfolgen mehrere Jahre als Doppelbände publiziert wurden.<br /> <br /> Aufgrund der im &lt;lex id=&quot;ereig-0074&quot;&gt;Zweiten Weltkrieg&lt;/lex&gt; zerstörten Einwohnermeldeunterlagen stellt das Adressbuch eine wichtige Ersatzüberlieferung zu den früheren Einwohnern der Stadt da und ist insgesamt durch seine zahlreichen Detailinformationen ein unschätzbares Quellenwerk zur Stadtgeschichte.<br /> <br /> Auf 1.120 Seiten (ohne Karlsruher Wirtschaftsspiegel) erschien 2014 das Karlsruher Adressbuch letztmalig in gedruckter Form.
